Mobile operator O2 has confirmed the web pages launched on Monday for the 3G iPhone pre-orders crashed under sheer weight of demand.

It also confirmed that the 16 GB version had already sold out online.

The website for new or existing O2 customers to get their hands on the latest Apple iPhone with 3G connectivity when it is launched in the UK this Friday went live at 8am on Monday.

An O2 spokeswoman told IT PRO she did not have any figures on how many customers successfully registered an order before “the site was not able to cope with the exceedingly high demand.”

“Although we were prepared for high demand, we’re working to get the site back up as soon as possible,” she added.

But she also echoed the “temporarily unavailable” notice currently greeting those eager to buy or upgrade to the new iPhone through the O2 online shop by recommending they get down to their nearest O2 store early from 8.02am this Friday 11 June.

O2 has split its 3G iPhone stock evenly between its stores and web shop. But it maintains it will be able to meet demand in-store on Friday.

After reports that some sms messages were being displayed in the wrong order after installing the latest 1.1.3 iPhone update, Apple have posted a solution – turn on the automatic date / time updates!. Apparently this occurs when the internal clock doesn’t match up to the carrier clock. Anyway, here’s the solution:

Make sure iPhone is setup to receive the network time. Choose General > Date & Time and turn Set Automatically to ON. (Note that in some locations, network time may not be available and in some cases, you may not see this option).

If the issue continues after turning this setting on, the issue may be occurring because messages are being sent in quick succession (more common if the messages consist of only a few short words).

The latest speculation surrounding the impending version 1.1.3 firmware for iPhone is that it will, at long last, contain the highly sought after cut and paste functionality.

WIRED magazine, in their Gadget Lab, take a suitably sarcastic tone in reporting the “news” lifted from MacScoop:

“Called Copy-and-Paste, this innovative feature lets the user take any piece of text on the screen, select it and then copy it to a temporary memory buffer, which Apple is calling the ClipBoard™. From there, the text can be re-inserted anywhere else. Why would you want this? Well, imagine being able to Copy-and-Paste a piece of a web page into an email, for example. The possibilities are endless. This forward thinking is typical of Apple.”

What isn’t clear, though, is exactly how this feature (presuming it’s genuine) will work. Plenty of people who have bemoaned the iPhone’s lack of such a feature have come up with their own ideas of how it should be done, but Apple will only do it one way.

Rumours abound of a new update for the iPhone that is supposed to appear in the next few weeks – although the list of new features reads more like a wish list. The video above apparently shows the new moving / pageable icons which would allow the user to scroll and move icons around the screen. Here’s that list in full:

Moveable and pageable icons (making room for 3rd party icons?) – see video above

Disk mode of storing general data (much like the iPod)

Voice recording mode for capturing voice memos

GPS-like triangulation positioning in Google Maps

Multiple recipients for sending SMS

As always, any new upgrade is likely to break existing mods to the firmware that allow the iPhone to run third party code or work with other carriers.
