Triple whammy for Apple

This Friday it’s a triple whammy for Apple.

Firstly, the long awaited iPhone 3G will finally make its way into the grubby paws of the eagerly waiting techno hordes.

Secondly, the device will feature Apple’s shiny new 2.0 software, which the company promises will turn the iPhone into a fully fledged business device, complete with Microsoft Exchange support and full compliancy with corporate security requirements.

And thirdly, the App store is arriving, so owners will be able to purchase nifty new, Apple-approved software direct to their handset.

The buzz certainly seems to have started, with reports that the pre-order site on the UK O2 web site went down on Monday morning under the pressure of pre-orders. By the time people were able to get through, all they got was an ‘out-of-stock’ message.

Meanwhile over in New York, where they have a tendency to take things just that little bit further, there is already a group of people waiting in line outside the Apple Store.

Initially, it seemed the group simply wanted to break the world record for waiting in line to buy a product, though afterwards it turned out they were a publicity seeking environmental collective who wanted to use the hype to promote an ‘agrico-political’ agenda – hippies, I think they used to be called.

3rd version of iPhone SDK released

Apple has released the third version of its beta iPhone SDK (build 9M2158a, beta 3), which fixes bugs from previous versions and adds support for the latest iPhone operating system.

Nothing more exciting than that, except it’s another fairly hefty download for anyone keeping up-to-date with the latest software — 1.37GB in fact.

iPhone Tester

iPhoneTester is an online iPhone simulator to test your iPhone specific web applications. The beauty of this is that you can test in any browser, although they do suggest you use the Safari browser (which makes sense).

Platforms: Any, but best viewed with Apple’s Safari browser

iPhoney iPhone Emulator 1.2

Market Circle has release iPhoney, an iPhone emulator that runs on the Apple Mac OS X (10.4.7 or higher).

For those of us developing iPhone web apps the iPhoney emulator could be just what we are looking for. It is a small application that simulates browsing on an iPhone. It uses a 320 x 480 view to test your web apps and although it doesn’t have all the fancy touch capabilities i.e. scaling or zooming in and out, it does allow you to rotate the page just as you can with the real iPhone. It also allows you to set the user agent to that of the iPhone.

It’s not perfect but it is free and does a pretty good job of showing you what your apps will look like on the real thing.

Platform: Apple Mac OS X (10.4.7 or above)
